The Ward 27 Youth Forum joined the Safer Cities Unit, KwaZulu-Natal Department of Justice and the National Youth Development Agency recently to host a sport against crime event for young people at Clarence Primary School. Councillor Nompumelelo Chamane said, “Today was not about winners and losers, but about encouraging young people to be responsible and take part in sport. “We are burying them daily because of HIV and Aids, and that shouldn’t be the case. We encourage young people to abstain. However, if they decide to have sex they need to get tested and use condoms,” she said.

Chamane urged young people to protect their democracy by registering to vote. “Many people lost their lives fighting for us to be where we are today, so let us be responsible and register to vote in the forthcoming local government elections,” she said. Youth forum member Akhona Khawula said, “It was great to see young people get together in the spirit of sport to show their support for the fight against crime.” Netball and soccer were among the sports played on the day and young people were entertained with music and given food for thought by various speakers. Head of Safer Cities, Martin Xaba said, “The Government cannot fight crime alone. We need the help of the community, because criminals live in our communities.”
