The Municipality has collected more than R17-million in outstanding traffic fines since the introduction of a 50% discount on fines at the beginning of October. Head of Metro Police Eugene Nzama said more than 38 000 motorists had grabbed the opportunity offered by the Municipality with both hands and urged others who owed money to follow suit before the discount period expires at the end of March. “Paying your fines shows a sense of civic responsibility.

It’s taking ownership of your errors and an opportunity to assess your driving skills and patterns,” Nzama said. With the pending implementation of the Administrative Adjudication of Road traffic Offences (Aarto) next year, the Municipality wants to clean up its database of motorists with outstanding traffic fines. The discount is open to all drivers who have committed offences while driving within the Municipal boundaries. Those who have several fines may stagger their payments over the six-month grace period. “Motorists should not wait until the last day to pay their traffic fines,” said Nzama.
